Exocon secures its first patent – innovation strengthens the company’s competitiveness in cold-climate heat pump markets

Technology company Exocon has been granted its first patent in Finland.

The patent protects a key technical solution within Exocon’s cold-climate heat pump technology: the architecture of its defrost cycle. This solution improves the performance, energy efficiency and operational reliability of heat pumps in demanding winter conditions.

This is a technology area where the real performance differences between air-to-water heat pumps emerge, particularly in northern climates. Cold, humidity, frosting and defrosting cycles reduce the efficiency of many conventional systems precisely when heating demand is at its highest.

“The granting of this patent is an important milestone for us. It confirms that the solutions we have developed are novel and commercially significant. At the same time, this marks the first step in our broader IPR strategy,” says Jarmo Lehto, CEO of Exocon. “We are systematically building our patent portfolio, which supports Exocon’s internationalisation, strengthens our competitive edge and increases the company’s value.”

A rapidly expanding market

Globally increasing energy efficiency requirements for buildings, the electrification of heating, the growing adoption of low-emission energy solutions, and the transformation of district heating networks are accelerating the growth of the heat pump market everywhere. Cold-climate markets in particular require solutions that maintain their performance even in the most challenging weather conditions.

“Exocon is targeting this growing market with modular, industrial-scale heat pump solutions, together with the ExoCare service, which ensures system performance, optimisation, high availability and predictable lifecycle economics,” Lehto summarises the company’s objectives.
