Technology
Technology that works in the northern reality
Exocon’s heat pumps are designed for conditions where frost, moisture, wind and variable weather conditions determine actual performance. A single scalable technology platform enables solutions for heating, cooling, energy recovery and hybrid solutions – without compromising on operational reliability.
Smart control and automation
Data that becomes performance
Exocon’s competitive advantage comes from smart control. The system uses extensive sensor technology and real-time data to optimise the entire refrigeration process. Measurement data continuously drives, among other things, the identification of defrosting needs, the operation of the compressor and fans, the maximisation of energy efficiency, and the assurance of operational reliability.
Our own PC-based automation platform
Exocon’s own PC-based automation enables more precise, flexible and advanced control than traditional solutions. The platform supports continuous software development, remote updates and optimisation, as well as the introduction of new functions without the need for physical maintenance visits.
Smart control and open interfaces
Exocon’s Smart Controller supports modern integrations and enables seamless connectivity with existing systems. Supported interfaces include Modbus RTU/TCP, BACnet/IP, MQTT and REST API, with OPC UA and Profinet available as additional options.
Open interfaces allow customers to connect to building automation, energy management systems and industrial control systems, as well as enabling remote monitoring, reporting and data analytics, and providing readiness for future expansion.
Heatprocess Highlevel Architecture
Equipment engineering designed for demanding conditions
Optimised evaporator
A sparser and deeper fin structure helps keep the airflow open for longer and reduces the impact of frosting. The result is more stable performance and improved energy efficiency.
Smart defrost logic
Defrosting starts at the right moment, based on actual need, and in a controlled manner. This avoids unnecessary defrost cycles and minimises energy losses.
Controlled condensate drainage
Controlled management of condensate reduces disruptions caused by freezing and improves operational reliability in winter conditions.
Fan technology and airflow management
The operation and start-up logic of the fans are optimised as part of the overall process, supporting efficient heat transfer in all conditions.
Insulated unit housing
Critical components are located in a protected, heated unit housing, which reduces heat losses and improves energy efficiency. At the same time, the equipment is protected from wind, moisture, snow and ice.
Verified performance
Real efficiency, every day of the year, in every season
Exocon’s performance is assessed under real operating conditions, not just at a single laboratory data point. What matters is how efficiently the system produces energy throughout the year – taking defrost cycles and variable conditions into account.
In practice, this means high efficiency even in severe frost, stable capacity throughout the winter, high outlet water temperatures for demanding applications, and predictable energy economics all year round.
Up to 95°C, down to an outdoor temperature of –35°C with a booster heat pump.
One system. One control. One responsibility.
Exocon can be supplied as an integrated complete solution, in which the heat pump, booster heat pump, electric boiler, cooling, energy recovery, ExoCare remote monitoring and ExoFlex optimisation are all combined under a single control system. For the customer, this means fewer investments, a smaller space requirement, simpler implementation and easier operation – as well as clearer division of responsibility and greater savings.
One complete solution – greater savings and reliability.
Industrial-grade technology with a long lifecycle
Exocon’s solutions draw on technology familiar from commercial and industrial refrigeration, where equipment is required to operate continuously with high reliability and predictable performance. The same thinking has been applied to heat pumps.
The solution is designed for a lifecycle of up to 30 years, and even longer with proper maintenance. For the customer, this means lower lifecycle costs, long-term investment security, high availability and better overall profitability.
Developed in real conditions
Exocon’s technology has been developed and tested in the demanding conditions of Northern Finland – including coastal environments, where frost, moisture, wind and icing conditions place exceptionally high demands on heat pumps.
Real performance, including during defrost cycles
Most heat pumps report their performance figures without accounting for the effect of defrost cycles. In real operating environments, defrost cycles affect the instantaneous output and efficiency of a heat pump, particularly in humid, sub-zero conditions. Exocon accounts for the impact of defrost cycles already in its performance figures and system sizing.
As a result, the customer benefits from:
- realistic energy consumption
- figures correct sizing
- true annual efficiency
- a more reliable payback calculation
Exocon reports true performance figures
All performance figures include the impact of defrost cycles.
The defrost correction factor is technology-specific
The defrost correction factor used by Exocon is based on Exocon’s own heat pump technology, designed for northern conditions, and on real operating conditions. The same correction factor cannot be directly applied to other heat pumps, as the impact of defrost cycles depends significantly on the equipment’s design, control logic and intended use.
